About Dr. Friedlaender:
Ari is a marine ecologist with a primary interest in using new technology to understanding the relationship between the marine mammals and their environment and how this is affected by human disturbances. Additionally, he partners with artists to develop new ways of communicating science broadly to non-science communities. He works on a wide range of marine mammal species including baleen and toothed whales and dolphins across a range of geographic regions. Ari has long-term ecological research projects ongoing in Alaska, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Antarctica. He has helped in the development of tag technology and analytical and visualization tools to better understand the underwater movements and behaviors of marine mammals. In Antarctica, Ari is part of the Long-Term Ecological Research program at Palmer Station to better understand the ecological roles of cetaceans in a rapidly changing environment. In California, Ari has helped to lead the SoCal Behavioral Response Study to understand the impacts of anthropogenic sound on a variety of cetacean species. Most recently, Ari has partnered with several different artists and artist networks to create exhibitions that focus on using science to inspire and inform works of art related to marine mammals and climate resilience in California. Ari is a National Geographic Explorer, World Wildlife Fund Ambassador, and BBC Natural History Unit partner and serves on several international research and conservation committees.
