VOLUNTEER PROGRAM 

Our dedicated team of volunteers helps the Ocean Institute teach through hands-on learning experiences every day! With a variety of specialized volunteer roles, we are sure to have an opportunity that’s just right for you. Click the button for a complete list of descriptions and minimum qualifications.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT) PROGRAM

Our Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Summer Program is designed for High School students to gain leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. During the Counselor-In-Training Program, participants will work alongside our summer camp counselors at Ocean Institute’s Summer Camp and assist with check-in, check-out, daily activities, and camper care.

STAN CUMMINGS SCHOLARS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

 

Internships at the Ocean Institute go from Fall – Spring with an intern showcase in the first part of June. Interns will gain hands on experience and a deep connection to Marine Science or Maritime History.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Ocean Institute is excited to offer our first-ever Summer Internship Program—an intensive, hands-on experience designed for high school and college students who are eager to deepen their knowledge of marine science, education, and environmental stewardship. Spend the summer with us! 

TEEN CONFERENCES

GIRLS IN OCEAN SCIENCE

The Girls in Ocean Science Conference connects influential female scientists with the next generation of ocean ambassadors. Scientists conduct hands-on workshops that will communicate the success and excitement available to women who pursue science as a career. Participants will spend the day conducting hands-on research with leading female ocean scientists in our labs and at sea aboard our research vessel, the Sea Explorer.

STOKED ON SCIENCE

The Stoked on Science Conference connects leading experts in their fields with the next generation of ocean ambassadors. Scientists will conduct hands-on workshops that introduce participants to their fields and the variety of offerings available to those who pursue science as a career. Participants will spend the day conducting hands-on research with leading scientists in our labs and at sea aboard our research vessel, the Sea Explorer.

TEEN CONFERENCE COMMITTEE

Ocean Institute’s Teen Conference Committee works directly with Ocean Institute leadership to plan, coordinate, and lead the Girls in Ocean Science & Stoked on Science Conferences. Attend weekly meetings, recruit scientists from various fields, source donations and sponsors, and more. 

SUMMER CAMP

MARINE SCIENCE CAREERS + INTERNSHIP ACADEMY

This week-long program introduces you to intertidal ecology, animal husbandry, laboratory investigations, and shipboard research to spark interest in careers and internships in marine science. Program highlights include a sail on the Spirit of Dana Point, a 4-hour research cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, and creating and conducting a research project in the Dana Point Marine Conservation Area. This week-long camp will also guide participants through resume building, internship or career applications, writing a cover letter, and engaging in leadership and team-building activities. Participants are encouraged to apply for our internship program or volunteer at Ocean Institute after summer camp!
