SUMMER INTERNSHIP program

Ocean Institute is excited to offer our first-ever Summer Internship Program!

Are you passionate about ocean conservation and education? Ocean Institute is excited to offer our first-ever Summer Internship Program—an intensive, hands-on experience designed for high school and college students who are eager to deepen their knowledge of marine science, education, and environmental stewardship.

Spend the summer with us!

Summer Interns spend the summer working as members of the OI staff and volunteer team, serving as an interpreter for the exhibits, displays, and activities we have available for guests. Interns are expected to become familiar with the facility and campus, the organization and our mission, and the qualities of an Ocean Institute ambassador. Interns are required to attend two initial trainings, study OI-issued challenge sheets in preparation for shifts, take initiative with guest interactions, and represent our motto, Experience is the Teacher. Learn the setup and cleanup protocols, take inventory of supplies, ensure guest safety, and provide an experience that brings the guest back.

Separate from our Stan Cummings Scholars Internship Program...

This internship takes place over the summer only. Summer Interns will receive specialized training in ocean education and docent responsibilities, gaining a thorough understanding of marine science and the role of environmental educators. As part of the Ocean Institute’s staff and volunteer team, interns will engage in interactive, educational activities, work in a team setting, and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.

How long is the internship program?

This program is active during Ocean Institute Summer Camp. Shifts will be weekly, as early as Saturday, June 14, until Sunday, August 17.

When are shifts for this program?

Shifts will be weekly for all interns. The day and time will be decided upon acceptance into the program. There are two weekly shifts to choose from for all roles available.

Who can be a summer intern?

Any high school or college student with a passion for the ocean! This program is designed for undergraduate college students and all levels of high school.

This seems like a lot to handle. How will I know what to do?

Ocean Institute provides several specialized trainings to acclimate new individuals to the team. There are two trainings that all interns must attend, and a specialized training based on their intern role. Interns will also spend a minimum of two shifts shadowing a staff member or experienced volunteer to learn more about how we conduct our shifts on the floor.

We value teamwork here at Ocean Institute, so you always have a helping hand nearby!
